PS4 to Get New Disk Format?

by Matthew on February 8, 2010

We have mentioned in the past that Sony could consider dropping optical drives on their next generation Sony Playstation 4 when launched, although Sony have more recently indicated that they are not yet ready to abandon physical medium just yet. Also the poll we ran also indicated that 74% of our readers would want an optical drive.

This leads us on to another thing to discuss that we have also mentioned before, and that is if Sony will continue to use Blu-ray optical discs, or if they will move on to something else as they traditionally do between generations of consoles. One idea is that they could make use of Holography on their optical discs to cram even more data on to them. A while back GE were apparently testing HVD for storage with theoretical capacities of up to 3.9TB per disk that would provide plenty of space for a game or even a good number of games.

By increasing the capacity of optical storage it would further allow developers to more comfortably work with 1080p HD video formats and high quality audio in games without worrying about being restricted to certain physical limits, or spanning across to a second or third disk.

Another reason for such large capacities being needed could be related to security according to psxextreme who mention an area of the disc could be used for enhanced security keeping copied games to a minimum.

We haven’t really had any official word on the Playstation 4 just yet although plenty of hints at a next gen console have been dropped by high profile gaming folk along with some of Sony’s staff. We expect that the PS4 will arrive in the next 2 to 3 years though sometime in 2012… maybe with a new optical drive format.

Wow That’s awesome….”Holography”…HEH 3.9TB that’s…damn huge…well i guess it would be awesome anyway, PS started with a CD, through DVD to currently Blu-Ray…god knows what’s coming up next…would be awesome if the games weren’t so expensive…real pain in the ass

Its sounds good but I think we not going to see HVD’s in PS4 because Sony, Philips, TDK, Panasonic and Optware all plan to release 1 TB capacity discs only in 2019 (wiki). So if Sony’s PS4 going to use Holographic Versatile Disc then I have plenty of time to save money for it :P

@james braselton
To replace your HDD with a disk is incredibly stupid. If you want to a faster HDD get a SDD.

if they wont to take out the optical drive-that’s fine-but why dont they leave a slot for it so that if someone what’s to add it later-they can buy one for it

I bet they’ll stay with Blu Ray since Sony helped invent Blu Ray, and have a massive stake in it. Or Blu Ray 3D which is in development.

Holographic memory will come later.

proud of dis site ps4talk, and all of you people’s are noobs… specialy da guy dat said bout wiki bs… for Holographic Verticle Disc, 6TB is its max mem, but 4 gaming PS limits up to 300GB disc, which is planing to be on sale in late 2011, go to youtube nd type holographic ver….. and yes.. PS4 RAM and data speed are upgraded to 1024mb GDDR5/DDR4 and 6gb/s compared to ps3 1.5 and 256gb/s, but also SYS MEM and display r upgraded to 250GB-1TB and 3840x2160p, info = http://www.edepot.com/playstation4.html

and dont call it holographic mem call it HVD, and 1080p=HDTV, 2160p=QF-HDTV (Quad Full High Definition) next gen of HD and next generation of computer processor = 4.7ghz (todays processor 2.8ghz)

PS4 INCLUDES, HVD disc, RAM 1024MB GDDR5 multitasking while in game/etc, 3DTV res for its 2160p graphic, and 4.7ghz processor from intel – http://www.lilith-ezine.com/articles/technology/Next-Generation-of-Computer-Processors.html
