PS4 Going Sensory?

by Matthew on December 9, 2008 · 4 comments

A few years ago a patent by Sony was filed which described a system where you could smell, taste and even feel things. A device was described which transmitted sensory data to the brain and by targeting the right parts of the brain it could simulate those senses and trick you in to thinking you had actually tasted something.

The system that Sony proposed was a non-invasive way that can fire ultrasound pulses in to your head at just the right frequency and direction. If done correctly the theory goes that you would experience a more in depth feel for the game you are playing. Imagine being thumped in a boxing game and actually feeling it, or smelling food in a cooking game.

The present invention solves the foregoing drawbacks by providing a non-invasive system and process for generating/projecting sensory data (visual, audio, taste, smell or touch) within/onto the human neural cortex.

Although the patent dates back to 2000 I still don’t feel we are any closer to this and would be surprised if this became available on the PS4. Do you think that this is the way next gen consoles are heading? I doubt it for the next round of consoles.

I don’t think the PS4 will have this but I think that this is what Sony is hoping the ultimate innovation from them will be eventually. Who know’s this could come in the PS6 or it may take till the PS9 if there even still in the Videogame business in the future.
