Do Sony have it down now with the Playstation controllers? The current control pad has gone through a number of phases from the basic PS1 pad which had the D-pad, 2 L, 2 R and the 4 buttons (X, O, square and triangle), on to the Dual Shock pad which added some nice rumble effects which was cool for Gran Turismo and all other games that used it.
We then moved on to the next generation of controller which is named the SIXAXIS. The SIXAXIS is based on the Dual Shock chassis but is wireless by using bluetooth (up to 7 controllers) or uses a mini USB to USB cable for charging purposes. The USB cable also allows for seamless wired or wireless controlling meaning if the batteries are running flat then you can quickly whip the cable in and carry on with out stopping game play.
The name SIXAXIS comes from it’s ability to sense movement on 3 axis (X,Y,Z) and therefore, allows for up, down, left, right, forward, backward (giving a total of 6 degrees). This allows a more “Wii like” interactivity with games.
Just one step on we have the Dualshock 3 pad. The reason this came out is that the SIXAXIS didn’t do rumbling. The Dualshock 3 is basically a SIXAXIS controller with rumble features.
So what can the 4th gen control pad for the Playstation be like? Really, what else could they add? I think along with rumble there needs to be something else to work with senses to immerse you more in the game. Post your ideas below.

I think they shud add an electric shock aswell as vibrating. Don’t u think this wud b cool?
ps4 is going to be awsome but what about ps5 one of my mates whos dad is part oner of sony has said that ps5 is going to a reallife simulater paly station have not gone wrong in any asspect the PS3 so sp4&ps5 should be even better
dude, imagine controllers with all the elements. This is impossible and i know its crazy and crap but if lets say you should find urself in a burning house inside a game the controller will heat up or if u find urself in a storm the controleer wil spurt out bursts of water and the controler will send out electric shocks
@Matthew – Crazy ideas there, but it would be funny. I like the heat idea. Not so crazy on the rain one though.
Erm… that might be too much to look for… emulating heat/cold/electric/rain/whatever emulation of the elements would be one of the most expensive features one controller could have, maybe even beyond our currenthuman reach… and that without making count of the discomfort that would put into most people.
I on the other hand would expect more of standard controller, one that would be at least more precise than the current generation of controllers. However that does not mean that the would be something more to look for. I personally would see a good controller opportunity with another possible handheld… a “PSP2″ maybe.
Given that this handheld console is made… it could become as a primary or secondary means to get by videogames… like unlocking secrets that could not otherwise be found without it. This “PSP2″ can have touch screen, motion sensing capabilities (like the SIXAXIS), and rumble features.
This could also lead to the creation of “Disc Sets” of Blu-Ray and UMDs (or whatever new type of minidisc will be uded for the PSP2) that are meant to be used together in order for the system to work as it should. Alternatively, the data could be streamed right from the PS4 in real time to save on material costs… given that wireless speed between the two systems is quick enough to not make some craptastic remote feature.
If you think lack of buttons would be a problem… the controller could also be made so that it can expand and allow the PSP2 to dock onto it and give you all that you need. But and alternative solution could be to use the touch features and allow quick access buttons to help you get a bit of a different taste of interaction.
Heck, the PSP could even be used as a remote in itself with touch features, as menus and buttons could be set to allow it to control playback of audio/video among other things.
Finally… the collaborating duo could be sold in set, (along with the standard controller and the PS4 that is) for those who would like to have the fully interactive combo right away.
With that, I tell you… imagine yourselves playing though a sports tournament, maybe even killing through an online war game, or maybe even planning your next RTS (not that turn-based crap) move in a Civilization-like game… imagine yourselves taking full advantage of two available screens that could help clen TV screen clutter but have things made more comfortable for you with touch-based menus and stuff as well as letting you take full advantage of other possible nice things.
Wouldn’t that be a really interactive (and likely out-of-the-ordinary enhanced) experience?
Let’s first assume the PS4 is _not_ backwards compatible with the PS1/2/3. Thus there’s no reason to keep the layout which has been hanging around since the PS1. This then means the controller can take the best attributes from all controllers.
Start with the Xbox 360 controller face layout: left analog, left D-pad, right analog, right 4 buttons. Keep the select/PS/start buttons from the Six Axis along with the click feature for the analog sticks.
Steal the analog+digital shoulder buttons from the Gamecube, but move the second digital shoulder buttons underneath where your middle finger would sit.
Skip the motion sensor unless it’s dirt cheap. It works for the Wii because each hand is separate, but I’m sticking with the wing grip style.
Upgrade the rumble so the left & right motors are independent, reversible, and variable speed.
Evolution, not revolution.
I hereby release all rights to this controller idea.
AGREE ILL KILL FOR THAT KIND OF CONTROLLER..
WEN UR IN DESERT THE CONTROLER WARMS AND IF UR IN COLD AREA IT BECOMES COLD NATURALLY PLUS THE MOTION SENSOR AND ANALOG SHOCKED..PERFECT
I Would Recommend To Make The Aim On The Game Like To Make The Aim More Sensitive And Precise Like A PC Mouse And To Make REAL LIFE Caracters (I Mean The REAL GAME It Wold BE Not Drown It Would Look Like A Movie … Like Real Life GAME!
Okay Eric Ball, so basically Sony’s controller should be an Xbox 360 controller, yeah? Put the left analog stick where the D-pad is (for whatever reason it is that you think that’s better); keep start, select, and the system’s logo button; put the “trigger” buttons under your middle fingers; and hey, screw that weird extra “tilty” function, it’s more expensive.
If anything, they should just add two more SHOULDER (not trigger) buttons to the top or back to allow for more simultaneous inputs (zoom aiming, jumping, boosting, alt. functions, etc.) while your thumbs are busy using the (symmetrical) analog sticks to move.
what they could add is something that this company tried developing for the ps2 controllers, which is adding a trackball to replace the right analog stick.
This would be way more convenient, and open up more ideas for developers to make make creative games. It would also be ideal for FPS games on console, so players can at least have precision as close as PC gamers have it.
FPS games shouldnt have auto-assist at all, and this could be the solution to help FPS/TPS games, as well as open up more ideas for different types of games.
Hi, i realy know how to make the new ps3 controll. best regards Elhad
.
i reckon tere should be like a sun glasses type of thing and you controll your charecter through a link in your brain
I like rizleys idea and the element thing but i think that like a body suit full of motion sensors and added with the element thing would be awsome but thats my opinion.
