No Wii 2 til’ 45 million Wii units sold

No Wii 2 til’ 45 million Wii units sold

Just to add to the rumor mill, so far we have heard that we’re not going to be able to play on the Wii 2 until at least 2012. Now it seems, according to Nintendo America’s Reggie Fils-Aime, that there aren’t any plans right now to bring out a second Wii console.

The Nintendo Wii is still doing well as the 30 million mark has already been reached, so is there any need for a number 2?

“As we sit here today we’re saying the Wii has many, many more units to sell,” said Reggie. “After we’ve reached an installed base of 45 million here in the US, we can have a conversation about the next generation.”

45 million? That’s not too far to go is it? With Microsoft and Sony prolonging the life of their own consoles with Kinect and Move, Nintendo will need to come up with something soon or else face a greater decline in unit sales and get left behind.

To the skeptical, this may seem like a marketing ploy in trying to get a few more quid out of the pockets of casual gamers but nevertheless, 45 million seems doable as long as Nintendo can up the ante.
