Half of PS3 Owners still use SDTV

by Matthew on August 6, 2009

sdtvWhile a good number of people have made the switch to high def (HDTV), a surprising statistic was recently mentioned which claims that “Over half the users who played Gears of War 2 so far do not have HDTVs…My point is, of the systems that are out there now, the majority of them aren’t plugged into HDTVs. So there’s no way we’re ready for the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox Whatever.”

Certainly an interesting thought as surely Sony want a HUGE push to move everybody to HDTV and until the majority of PS3’s are plugged in to HD then they quite possibly wont bother launching the PS4 until this happens.

I doubt that Sony have the guts to completely ignore SDTV users considering over half still own the old style TV. This is all assuming that the PS4 will function in HD only. As we mentioned a few months back, Sony might even go for super hi-vision although my own thoughts are that they will stick the emphasis on HD but probably allow for backwards compatibility to SDTV with the possibility of “some games” requiring HD to function. Maybe an SD TV connection will require some sort of conversion box or cable that’s sold separately.

What ever Sony do with the next gen consoles it certainly will need to be slightly different to what they do now. Could they go browser-based like discussed yesterday and venture in to cloud computing?

I still use a SDTV for my PS3…it sucks though! I want a HDTV, but can’t yet afford one, and have too many other priorities first. They are getting cheaper though, and HD gaming looks so much better. Maybe come christmas time I will splash out and buy myself a HDTV. Infact…I think i’m gonna get saving now.
