Will the PS4 stick with Blu-Ray??

by Martyn on November 25, 2010 · 0 comments

The Blu-ray disc is said to portray the sharpest, clearest and finest picture and sound quality to date, this naturally comes at a price as Blu-ray disc sales will many times double the price of a regular DVD to roughly £20.  Though in spite of this, last year, the Digital Entertainment Group Europe (DEGE), the people who brought us the Blu-ray disc saw unit sales soar to 167 per cent which helped offset the 9 per cent  decline in European DVD sales in the same year. The Humble Controller – Past and Present

by Martyn on November 22, 2010 · 0 comments

The humble games controller or joypad (and rightly so) as it’s alias, has been around for decades and decades. Though found in different forms have all been used for the sole purpose of “controlling” a character on a screen in front of you, however many pixels it may have been. Remember the atari joystick with the one red button?? [click to continue…]

PlayStation 4 could go all digital

by Martyn on November 19, 2010 · 1 comment

It was the PSPGo that started the ball rolling with only allowing gamers to download content to their handhelds by completely dropping the UMD drive that was prevalent on Sony’s first portable outing. Even rumors about the PSP 2 still going to be in keeping with digital downloads only are popping up all over the place.

Well now another rumor has poked its head from amidst the mess of unconfirmed news currently doing the rounds. This one in particular speaks of Sony’s PS4 possibly opting for DLC only. [click to continue…]

PS4 Beats XBOX in Next Gen Most Wanted Poll

by Matthew on January 11, 2010 · 28 comments

A recent poll was run over at TechRadar that asked what the most desirable next gen gadget would be. The Sony PS4 beat the next gen XBox 720 by almost twice the amount of votes.

Although it’s not a particularly scientific poll where results are predicting a future set in stone, it does show a surprising amount of interest for the rumoured PS4. [click to continue…]

Killzone2Boxart3_smallRecently, Jan-Bart Van Beek, Guerilla Studios, is reported to have said that they are already on with the production of KZ3 and that it’s currently pencilled in for 2011, but he did hint it may even come as early as 2010. This is great news for PS3 fans, as I personally loved KZ2 and a sequel would be much loved.

However, the quick turnaround time between games does lean me towards the opinion that the game will be a re-working from the KZ2 engine, similar to the way Rockstar do with GTA. For example, GTA 3 was released on PS2, and then Vice City and San Andreas were released, with many improvements, but based on the same engine. This would sit well with me though. For me, KZ2 was great and I loved how it looked and played.

Will Sony ‘overcook’ the PS4?

by Paul on August 26, 2009 · 26 comments

Overcooked PS3

Upon reading more about the new improved slim PS3 it became apparent to us that Sony appear to have “overcooked” the PS3. When the PS3 was released it had full backwards compatibility, 4 USB Ports, Linux Capabilities, fancy touch sensitive on/off and eject buttons (clutching at straws here with that one), a 60GB HDD and a Card Reader. This has steadily all been removed. So, the PS3 price has dropped which is great news, but so has the feature list, and quite extensively. Sure the Slim PS3 HDD is 120GB, but it did temporarily drop to 40GB, which sucked. I don’t seem to remember any features being dropped from either the PS1 or PS2, even with the slim-line models they released.

New PS4 Colour? It seems that a lot of products we buy these days come in a variety of colours. However, the PS3 is still only available in shiny black everywhere except Japan (although there have been rumors of the USA getting another colour choice). If you could choose a colour for the Sony PS4 what would it be?

For me…i’m going to be boring and say shiny black. I like the black look of the PS3, it suits it well, and it matches my Tv quite nicely. I thought i’d like the white PS3, but it really doesn’t do it for me! So, get commenting on what colour you’d like to see, and why.

There’s also a poll of the most obvious colour choices, so you can vote there.

Will PC’s and Consoles Merge?

by Matthew on December 13, 2008 · 5 comments

I came across an interesting article today titled “PC to become future of console platforms?” which put forward the question of PC makers making their PC’s and laptops, console compatible. Rather than there being a Playstation 4 the PS4 could just have hardware requirements. PC makers can then offer an optional extra PS4 add on. If the PC meets the requirements then you can play PS4 games on it.

Most people know that the Sony Playstation 3 sucks up power like crazy. Back in May, Choice (based in Australia) ran some comparisons of how much it costs to run various gadgets and consoles that are commonly seen around the home. Out of a list of 15 electrical items the PS3 was the most expensive to run. This is the scary part though… if you leave your PS3 switched on and just let it idle, it would cost you $157* per year to leave idle and while playing a game would add just another $7 or so dollars to that if you were to play 24/7/365. Folding@Home suddenly became a little more expensive then you expected!

Yes, we all know the PS4 isn’t particularly close to release yet, but I always like to imagine what games will be released with the arrival of a new console. Obviously there will be many new titles available, which we have never before seen, but a next-gen console also allows for an often much needed improvement to a series of games which is already familiar to us, the gamers. Gran Turismo in Super High Def

by Matthew on December 5, 2008 · 1 comment

Back in October, Polyphony Digital held an event that celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Gran Turismo series. The event named DOWNSHIFT SESSION 2008 was put together to show off the highest possible quality presentations. They managed to do this successfully by achieving a super HD resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels by connecting together 4 Playstation 3 consoles and making each display one quarter of the super high def screen (ie, 1920 x 1080 pixels of 1080p Full HD time 4). The system worked successfully. A graphical detail can be seen below of how it all worked. [click to continue…]

I’m sure most of you have heard the rumours regarding the supposed forwards compatibility of the next-gen XBox 720. I was just wondering what you all think as to whether the PS4 will feature the same technology also?

Incase you don’t know, forwards compatibility is the ability for the PS4 to play PS3 games at a vastly improved level. We’re not just talking things looking a little better, we’re talking the level of re-draw being vastly improved, or the possibility of multiplayer games being able to feature 32 players online instead of 16 etc. Basically the PS3 game benefits from the extra hardware capabilities of a new system.

I personally think it’s a great idea, giving older games a new lease of life by utilising the extra hardware power of a next-gen console! Currently whenever i go to play my old PS1 or PS2 games on my PS3 I get bored after just a few minutes because they instantly look so dated. Having forward compatibility will eliminate this. Software houses may decide to release new DLC for the game which fully utilises the extra hardware.

I guess perhaps one reason why Sony may decide not to do this would be a lack of revenue, as people may not be so eager to buy new games if their old ones are getting a new lease of life!

Feel free to discuss until your hearts content about the possibility of this feature over at our forums!
