While a good number of people have made the switch to high def (HDTV), a surprising statistic was recently mentioned which claims that “Over half the users who played Gears of War 2 so far do not have HDTVs…My point is, of the systems that are out there now, the majority of them aren’t plugged into HDTVs. So there’s no way we’re ready for the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox Whatever.”
Certainly an interesting thought as surely Sony want a HUGE push to move everybody to HDTV and until the majority of PS3′s are plugged in to HD then they quite possibly wont bother launching the PS4 until this happens. [click to continue…]
Matt Spall, a gaming industry veteran, has been speaking recently about upcoming next gen gaming consoles. His views are that gaming will move in to the cloud when the next generation is here in a few years time. He claims that “we will never see another ‘traditional’ console coming to the market. ”. It’s certainly an interesting view in light of how Google has recently announced the Chome OS which will be cloud based. Will next gen consoles follow the pattern that Google is trying to set? or is cloud technology still too far in it’s infancy for such a big task? [click to continue…]
During a meeting with Ubisoft the CEO, Yves Guillemot, said that they are already preparing for the next generation of gaming consoles to be launched. However, this preparation wasn’t in the way of starting to develop anything and instead, Ubisoft are being prepared financially. Next gen games will no doubt be a lot more complex and details then the current complex PS3 games that we see on sale. This will put a financial strain on those not ready for it.
“We need to get ready for the future generation of consoles,” Guillemot told investors. “In the next few years, there will be new home and handheld consoles, and if you don’t invest… you will not be able to cope with both [the existing and new generation consoles].”
Not only do developers need to get saving for a PS4, Wii 2 or an Xbox 720… they also need to look at next gen hand held gaming. Nobody really knows what the gaming scene will be like in 3 years time, but if Sony follow their 10 year plan then we can expect a console with in 3 years. Back on to handheld gaming for a minute… we also do not know what to expect here. Possibly larger roll out screens, projected screens etc… What ever they might be capable of Ubisoft feel it is a time to be prepared.
As ever, rumours are still moving around the net about the arrival of a PS4 in a couple of years time. No official specs or even a mention have been found yet except for a few comments made by Sony people saying the expect there to be more and more playstations over the years.
The next question asks if Sony will dump blu-ray in favour of holography. Some content over on the NY Times recently indicated that GE were researching storage capacity on holographic disks (HVD). The technology has been around a few years but isn’t yet available on the market. A theoretical 3.9 TB of data could be stored if the companies working on it get it right. Given those numbers and the time left until a PS4 launch (2012 at a guess) it would appear that HVD’s might be the way forwards.
“This could be the next generation of low-cost storage,” said Richard Doherty, an analyst at Envisioneering, a technology research firm.
It seems that a lot of products we buy these days come in a variety of colours. However, the PS3 is still only available in shiny black everywhere except Japan (although there have been rumors of the USA getting another colour choice). If you could choose a colour for the Sony PS4 what would it be?
For me…i’m going to be boring and say shiny black. I like the black look of the PS3, it suits it well, and it matches my Tv quite nicely. I thought i’d like the white PS3, but it really doesn’t do it for me! So, get commenting on what colour you’d like to see, and why.
There’s also a poll of the most obvious colour choices, so you can vote there.
We have mentioned 3D recently a couple of times. The first time was speculating on the PS4 having 3D capabilities built in, and then shortly after news was announced that the PS3 should receive a firmware update to allow 3D to be used. With an update possibly arriving for the PS3 it is pretty certain that the PS4 will follow this same route right out of the gate. This speculation is also held up by the way the movie and TV industry is going with 3D. [click to continue…]
The PS3 has the ability to install a Linux OS on its HDD, turning it into a home computer. This offers great flexibility to the system, which some love and others don’t care for. We here at PS4Talk see this as a possible step towards one of the more popular OS’s being available on the PS4, that the regular consumer will care to use. Linux is a massively popular OS, but ask the general person what is is and they just shrug their shoulders and think you’re an uber geek. [click to continue…]
After another busy post about Super Hi-Vision possibly being an option on the Playstation 4, the general opinion was no chance as the current console doesn’t fully make use of 1080p just yet. I have to agree with the comments made that Sony should concentrate on the current technology for viewing. However, I came across 3D TV the other day which caught my attention. In the UK, Sky have mentioned that they have successfully made their first test broadcast (to just 1 TV set) by using a standard Sky+ box. This test will hopefully pave the way to more shows and channels being broadcast in 3D within the next 2 – 3 years. This has led me to ponder the possibility of Sony utilising 3D TV for the PS4.
With Flash memory becoming cheaper all the time we at PS4talk were wondering about the possibilities of the PS4 controllers having a small amount of memory built in to them. You may wonder why…well let me tell you. I regularly take my controller around to friends houses as we have multiplayer gaming sessions, and have sometimes wanted to have my save game perks with me that I have acquired on my own PS3. When Sony first announced Remote Play I got a little excited. I fully embraced the idea of playing games remotely from my PS3 onto my PSP. I was a little disappointed though when it turned out that it was only really PS1 games that you could play. There are a few exceptions, but nothing too amazing. [click to continue…]
Super Hi-Vision is a technology that was first introduced in 2003. It has various names such as UHDTV (ultra high definition television) and makes 1080p (Full HD) look small. SHV runs at a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels which is the equivalent of 16 1080p screens stitched together. According to a report in September from the BBC they say that SHV will be coming to the home around 2015 although many changes can happen in 7 years from now. What they are aiming to do is step up another level to what ever that might be. All we do know is that resolutions will be a lot higher then they are now to give you an even finer image. It’s debatable about how much you will actually notice on screen sizes that are commonly seen in the home.
A few years ago a patent by Sony was filed which described a system where you could smell, taste and even feel things. A device was described which transmitted sensory data to the brain and by targeting the right parts of the brain it could simulate those senses and trick you in to thinking you had actually tasted something.
