PS4 Speculation

New PS4 Colour? It seems that a lot of products we buy these days come in a variety of colours. However, the PS3 is still only available in shiny black everywhere except Japan (although there have been rumors of the USA getting another colour choice). If you could choose a colour for the Sony PS4 what would it be?

For me…i’m going to be boring and say shiny black. I like the black look of the PS3, it suits it well, and it matches my Tv quite nicely. I thought i’d like the white PS3, but it really doesn’t do it for me! So, get commenting on what colour you’d like to see, and why.

There’s also a poll of the most obvious colour choices, so you can vote there.

PS4 to focus on 3D?

by Matthew on January 23, 2009

Is 3D the Way Forwards?

Is 3D the Way Forwards?

We have mentioned 3D recently a couple of times. The first time was speculating on the PS4 having 3D capabilities built in, and then shortly after news was announced that the PS3 should receive a firmware update to allow 3D to be used. With an update possibly arriving for the PS3 it is pretty certain that the PS4 will follow this same route right out of the gate. This speculation is also held up by the way the movie and TV industry is going with 3D. [click to continue…]

Windows or OS X on the PS4?

by Paul on January 5, 2009

The PS3 has the ability to install a Linux OS on its HDD, turning it into a home computer. This offers great flexibility to the system, which some love and others don’t care for. We here at PS4Talk see this as a possible step towards one of the more popular OS’s being available on the PS4, that the regular consumer will care to use. Linux is a massively popular OS, but ask the general person what is is and they just shrug their shoulders and think you’re an uber geek. [click to continue…]

Will the PS4 Use 3D TV?

by Matthew on December 23, 2008

After another busy post about Super Hi-Vision possibly being an option on the Playstation 4, the general opinion was no chance as the current console doesn’t fully make use of 1080p just yet. I have to agree with the comments made that Sony should concentrate on the current technology for viewing. However, I came across 3D TV the other day which caught my attention. In the UK, Sky have mentioned that they have successfully made their first test broadcast (to just 1 TV set) by using a standard Sky+ box. This test will hopefully pave the way to more shows and channels being broadcast in 3D within the next 2 – 3 years. This has led me to ponder the possibility of Sony utilising 3D TV for the PS4.

With Flash memory becoming cheaper all the time we at PS4talk were wondering about the possibilities of the PS4 controllers having a small amount of memory built in to them. You may wonder why…well let me tell you. I regularly take my controller around to friends houses as we have multiplayer gaming sessions, and have sometimes wanted to have my save game perks with me that I have acquired on my own PS3. When Sony first announced Remote Play I got a little excited. I fully embraced the idea of playing games remotely from my PS3 onto my PSP. I was a little disappointed though when it turned out that it was only really PS1 games that you could play. There are a few exceptions, but nothing too amazing. [click to continue…]

Will Sony Ready the PS4 for Super Hi-Vision?

by Matthew on December 10, 2008

Super Hi-Vision is a technology that was first introduced in 2003. It has various names such as UHDTV (ultra high definition television) and makes 1080p (Full HD) look small. SHV runs at a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels which is the equivalent of 16 1080p screens stitched together. According to a report in September from the BBC they say that SHV will be coming to the home around 2015 although many changes can happen in 7 years from now. What they are aiming to do is step up another level to what ever that might be. All we do know is that resolutions will be a lot higher then they are now to give you an even finer image. It’s debatable about how much you will actually notice on screen sizes that are commonly seen in the home.

PS4 Going Sensory?

by Matthew on December 9, 2008

A few years ago a patent by Sony was filed which described a system where you could smell, taste and even feel things. A device was described which transmitted sensory data to the brain and by targeting the right parts of the brain it could simulate those senses and trick you in to thinking you had actually tasted something.

PS4 and the possibility of Head Tracking

by Paul on December 8, 2008

Johnny Chung Lee is a master in all things Wiimote (plus a lot of other things I imagine). He has manipulated the use of the Nintendo Wii controller to provide such things as multi-point interactive whiteboards, finger tracking and now head tracking. The Wiimote features an Infra-Red camera, which reads the location of the infra-red LED’s generally found in the sensor bar which is placed above the TV. By reversing the setup, mounting the wiimote on the tv, and effectively wearing the infra-red LED’s on your head, the Wiimote can be configured to feature head tracking. [click to continue…]

Will the PS4 have an optical disk drive?

by Paul on December 7, 2008

The revolution of the internet is in full swing, as is the drive on reducing our ‘carbon footprint’. With internet speeds continuing to increase, such things as downloadable movies and game demos for the current PS3 have become available. If Sony decide to insist on all PS4 content being downloadable only it would remove the need for an optical disk drive. This would also remove the cap which games have due to the finite limit of data which can be stored on a disk. No longer will games be confined to DVD or Blu Ray capacity disks, instead they can be of an almost infinite size. This exclusion of a drive will also reduce the overall price of the console, noise and power consumption [click to continue…]

PS4 to Use the Cell Processor Platform?

by Matthew on October 1, 2008

More rumours are floating around about Sony’s PS4 today. This time a company named Goto have mentioned that the Cell Broadband Engine (or Cell processor) that is used in the PS3 might be used as a base in the Playstation 4. Of course, there is no official source of this information as Sony have not yet released information about it. According to Goto they believe that Sony is looking at an upgraded PS3 chipset to power the PS4 although I am not convinced my self yet.

If Sony stick with the Cell platform then there are benefits as the main brunt of the work has already been done and it’s just a matter if improving it more. However, would Sony use a technology from today in 4 years time when it is launched?

Goto have also speculated that we could be seeing up to 32 cores in the PS4 next gen console as opposed to 8 in the current PS3. This number was arrived at by using the popular Moore’s Law, although they also think that Sony might just stop at 20 cores and slightly increase the clock speed which would put things just over 2x in performance from the PS4 box.

The main reasoning behind Goto’s claims is that it could take a good number of years (like 4 or so) for Sony to develop a new chip. If they are aiming for a 2011 release date then by using the Cell this might be possible.

My own opinion on this is that what ever they do, we should see a difference in game quality so that we feel we have a need to upgrade from our PS3′s.

Which next gen Console Will be First?

by Matthew on September 3, 2008

So far there are three contenders for the next gen console race. The PS4, XBOX 720 and the Wii 2. So far Sony have said that they are releasing a Playstation 4 as they knew what went wrong with the PS3. The XBOX 720 (not an official name) seems to be in production as MS have said…

Q: What’s the planning cycle?
A: We start thinking about the next generation before we shipped the Xbox 360. It doesn’t start with a date. It starts way upstream with silicon development. From that comes a series of data points. You start making early technology choices. It’s an evolving thing. Stuff doesn’t become concrete until you get inside a window of when you have to ship, more than 18 months or so out.

As for the Wii 2… we are just hoping that this thing arrives as the Wii was just plain genious and changed the way people play games.

Drop by our Playstation 4 forums and let us know which next gen console will be released first.
