Toshiba are launching a new SSD that is in the 2.5″ form. It’s capacity is a fairly huge 512GB which makes it the worlds largest capacity 2.5″ SSD drive in the world. It will be officially shown off at CES in 2009 which will be held in Las Vegas in a few weeks time. The 512GB SSD is named the THNS512GG8B and is a NAND-flash-based SSD.

“The solid state drive market is evolving rapidly, with higher performance drives to meet market requirements, and differentiated product families targeted for appropriate applications,” said Mr. Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Vice President of Toshiba Corporation’s Semiconductor Company. “This new 43nm SSD family balances value/performance characteristics for its targeted consumer applications, through use of MLC NAND and an advanced controller architecture.”

It does make you wonder what capacity will become available by the time of the PS4 launch and if storage on the PS4 will be SSD based rather then harddrive based. Looking at the history of flash drives we could expect to see capacities a lot larger then 512GB being made available by 2012 although to get the PS4 costs down I am sure Sony won’t put the largest available SSD in as they tend to cost a lot. I do see the possibility of at least a 1TB SSD being used on the PS4.

I wouldn’t put my money on Terabyte level SSDs being on PS4 consoles just yet…

The technology, although advancing quite rapidly, it is quite expensive, and that would make a console like the PS4 probably too expensive as well. If I were to judge best, we might be able to see Terabyte level HHDs which will become much cheaper by the time, and, alternatively, 512 GB SSDs on it… at least judging by common release dates for Sony’s consoles.

Now, thinking in geek… it would be really awesome to have Terabyte level SSDs right on the PS4 if it comes out, I wouldn’t have to worry (much) about video game installs, even more awesome if they decided to play on RAID data management to reduce load times to it’s best possible minimum.

I’m willing to put money Sony would implement non-properity SSD’s in all PS4’s but the question is how much GB’s. I just don’t want to see multi SKU’s again. Just give us 1 version for all, like in the olden days please.
