PS3 Problems
A recent round table discussion between Kotaku, Engadget, Gizmodo and Sony there were some interesting conversations to be found. One such was about the PS3 and what went wrong with it. The good news is that they know how to fix the problem. Representing Sony was Jack Tretton (CEO) Sony Computer Entertainment America. The short version is that Sony has always focussed on hardware. With the PS3 they did both tasks, but the hardware and software teams did not really speak together. The hardware people created the PS3, dumped it on the laps of the software guys and said “here, work with it”.
In Jack’s words, “we know what we’re doing,” but it’s going to take a long time to atone for past missteps.
In essence, as Tretton says, the PS3 was not developed in collaboration between the two teams. As a result of this, the software team has been cleaning up the mess made by the hardware team for years.
If Jack Tretton and Kaz Hirai are the ones working on the next gen PS4 (which is no doubt coming out in a number of peoples views) then we can be sure to get a console polished up the way it should be, built by collaboration of the hardware and software guys.
Seems like something waiting for although do go and buy a PS3 still as some good things are available on there and the PS4 is many years away yet.

A comment was made recently which suggested controllers are more interactive. The basis behind this idea is that when you are in a “warm environment” the controller would warm up to let you know what the surrounding virtual area is like. Imagine the opposite to be true too where you are in a shoot-em-up game playing in the depths of winter and your controller just turns “ice cold”. It would be like the real thing trying to control a character with freezing cold hands.
I think the ideas are crazy, but still cool if Sony could pull that off on the PS4.

After racking my brains for a while I have come up with a few cool ideas on what might be made available in the next gen Playstation 4 (PS4). Graphics wise it would be cool to put yourself in the actual game through some sort of 3D scanning device that could take side and front profile pics with your web cam. Wouldn’t it be cool to run around on GTA as your self! Maybe you go down to the local scanning booth and they create you a permanent 3D wire frame model with textures that you can import in to any game.
Other options that might be possible is a live city that use real data of building being built so that a road in a game might actually be closed for road works and a plot of land that was available might now have a building on it. Maybe you could even put your own street in your game with a mixture of satellite imaging and fancy 3D rendering.
Networking will also be key on the PS4 and games should take the real life and put it in to games to make them more realistic. For example, a company in the Netherlands has build a system which tracks Formula 1 cars and allows you to race against drivers live as the F1 races happen. This takes AI almost out of the equation. Imagine racing Lewes Hamilton at the speed he actually races. A whole new level of depth will be needed. Games will no longer be confined to just a city or a few levels. You will be able to travel to other locations as games will be just massive.
I also expect to see a lot more of the social networking type stuff happen too with there always is a gamer online to play against, or several hundred. Games could be the home of 1000’s of players all playing out in their own corner of the gaming universe much like second life.
Seamless changes between games could also be a feature. Rather then sticking in a new blu-ray disk in your machine you just walk along to the closest virtual football stadium and start playing a game. Bored of football? you fly to the closest race track and have a bash at Nascar with a ton of other players.
It might happen this way, it might not. But it’s cool to think of what could happen and what will be happening with these next next gen consoles.

A couple of new patents have been released by Sony recently. The first was covered over at Gadget Venue which spoke of a touch screen PSP and the ability for feedback from individual pixels rather then a general “rumble” that you normally feel on a controller. The next patent caught my interest today as it mentions a “motion-controlled image transfer device”. [click to continue…]
