Electric Shock PS4 Controllers?

by Matthew on June 29, 2008

RealTaken made a comment recently that made me laugh. In the post about the Playstation 4 controllers a comment was made which said…

I think they shud add an electric shock aswell as vibrating. Don’t u think this wud b cool?

That certainly would make players pay more attention and drive more safely on the racing games. Each crash would be a real shocking experience :)

Thanks RealTaken!

If anybody else has some zany ideas then drop it in the comments here and we will give your site a shout out in a round up post of crazy PS4 ideas.

XBox 720 to Beat Playstation 4?

by Matthew on June 28, 2008

xbox-720Sony have mentioned that the PS3 will be around for 10 years. What does this mean for the future of the Sony Playstation 4? Well, considering the PS2 and PS3 went side by side for a while, it might not mean much. We still could see a PS4 console in the next few years. However, Microsoft have also expressed interest in this area and “might” be planning on beating Sony to the mark. Maybe an XBox 720 is just around the corner ;)

Q: Do you want to be first with the next one, too?
A: Too early to tell. Our view is we will be selling Xbox 360 for a long time. We are always working on new technologies. We have people working on those. People ask me how many people I have working on the next generation. On the one hand, it’s everybody. On the other, it’s nobody. People are continuously working on new technology.

Q: What’s the planning cycle?
A: We start thinking about the next generation before we shipped the Xbox 360. It doesn’t start with a date. It starts way upstream with silicon development. From that comes a series of data points. You start making early technology choices. It’s an evolving thing. Stuff doesn’t become concrete until you get inside a window of when you have to ship, more than 18 months or so out.

Could the PS4 be here next year?

by Matthew on June 8, 2008

Ken Kutaragi made a statement once which explained he had a vision “of a Playstation 4, 5 and 6 which will merge into the network”. According to Softpedia a Sony employee leaked some information…

The device will include the same chipset as the current PS3 but where it will differ from the current model is in the drive bay and in the attachment area. It will also include an extensive software suite for the managing of content being streamed to a TV or Hi-Fi source. In addition, Sony is working on improving the output experience so that the device can become a true home entertainment centre eliminating the need for a media centre.

Does this description sound like it would justify receiving the PS4 title? I do not personally think so and assume it’s some stepping stone in between which is probably some kind of home media centre/PS3 mixed together.

I do not see a reason why Sony would use the same chipset for a next gen (4th gen) console… so as far as rumours go, I doubt we will see the Playstation 4 any time soon.

Playstation 4 Controllers

by Matthew on June 8, 2008

Do Sony have it down now with the Playstation controllers? The current control pad has gone through a number of phases from the basic PS1 pad which had the D-pad, 2 L, 2 R and the 4 buttons (X, O, square and triangle), on to the Dual Shock pad which added some nice rumble effects which was cool for Gran Turismo and all other games that used it.

We then moved on to the next generation of controller which is named the SIXAXIS. The SIXAXIS is based on the Dual Shock chassis but is wireless by using bluetooth (up to 7 controllers) or uses a mini USB to USB cable for charging purposes. The USB cable also allows for seamless wired or wireless controlling meaning if the batteries are running flat then you can quickly whip the cable in and carry on with out stopping game play.

The name SIXAXIS comes from it’s ability to sense movement on 3 axis (X,Y,Z) and therefore, allows for up, down, left, right, forward, backward (giving a total of 6 degrees). This allows a more “Wii like” interactivity with games.

Just one step on we have the Dualshock 3 pad. The reason this came out is that the SIXAXIS didn’t do rumbling. The Dualshock 3 is basically a SIXAXIS controller with rumble features.

So what can the 4th gen control pad for the Playstation be like? Really, what else could they add? I think along with rumble there needs to be something else to work with senses to immerse you more in the game. Post your ideas below.

Launch of the Playstation 4 Forums

by Matthew on June 8, 2008

This website is named PS4Talk.com which indicates it’s a place to “talk about the Playstation 4″. There are three ways in which you can join in the conversation here, and I am going to let you know how this can be done.

1.)PS4Talk.com runs on Wordpress and is a blog. This allows you to post comments on each post about your thoughts on the subject at hand. If you want to let us know your comments, good or bad (keep the language clean) then feel free to enter your comment in the comments box below.

2.)We also have a forum attached to the site over at TechVenue.net. Click to go to the Playstation 4 Forums. You will need to register to post, and by registering over at TechVenue.net you will also gain access to several other forums that we run which are all stored at the same location. Go check them out now!

3.)Guest Posting. If you really want to get known by our readers then feel free to email a guest post to us. Rather then asking for permission, simply write something unique which could be your ideas, or something cool you have spotted that just has to be shared. Email it to support@ps4talk.com and if we like it, we will post it. Please include 1 link to your own website and let us know your name so we can credit you with that link to let everyone know how wonderful you are.

Feel free to discuss the Playstation 4 in any of those 3 methods here! We understand it’s mostly speculation now, but it’s still good fun wondering what this monstrous machine could end up being in the next 4 or so years.

PS4 Backwards Compatible?

by Matthew on June 8, 2008

A while back a job listing was tracked down which suggested that Sony are working on a “next gen” console. This rumour started because a job listing was spotted over at Sony which was asking for a software engineer who could develop backward compatibility for the Sony Playstation 3 and an unspecified next-gen console. Could it be the Sony Playstation 4? Or are Sony just trying to make us think too much ;)

It would be interesting to see if in 2012 the PS4 will play all ranges of games.

Playstation 4 Storage

by Matthew on June 8, 2008

All of the Sony Playstations, including the PSP (Playstation Portable) have optical dics, with the PS1 supporting CD’s, PS2 with DVD’s, PS3 with Blu-Ray and PSP with Sony’s own format named the UMD. Will the Playstation 4 follow suit? I doubt it.

Almost a year ago, a 75 year old lady from Sweden became the fastest home internet connection owner in the world. Her 40Gbps (Yes, Gbps and not Mbps) connection was run as a test to see if it was possible to run these kind of speeds in to a home. 40Gbps would be capable of downloading a HD disc in just 2 seconds. This leads to the possibility that much faster internet will be readily available for the “estimated 2011 – 2012″ release date for the Playstation 4.

If far greater download speeds are available then could this mean that the optical disc is dropped finally and games are only available for download. Maybe just a few $ for a months rental which can be downloaded in seconds or just a few minutes.

It’s something worth thinking about and by 2012 should be easily possible given the advances we see month by month in technology.

It’s years away from being released, but yet you cannot help but wonder what a Playstation 4 would be like. Ever since the beginnings back in the early 90’s when the PS1 first came out, people have been amazed at what the console achieved. Finally, 3D graphics were starting to happen (remember Ridge Racer and Destruction Derby) and the games were also very playable. It had a WEIRD looking controller, but yet it was the most comfortable of any other ever made. The sounds generated and audio were also top notch.

Gran Tursimo made it’s debut on the PS1 and the game was just amazing. Move forwards a few more years and the Playstation 2 was launched. All the game play was just as good as a PS1, but the graphics were far more stunning. GT3 A-Spec was amazing as well as the Grand Theft Auto games which now were appearing in 3D. Then we moved on to the Playstation 3 in the last couple of years. The PS3 didn’t get as much love from the public as the 2 previous models did. Maybe that was due to the Nintendo Wii, or Microsoft XBox 360… however, things are starting to come together and some good games are being developed with even more realistic graphics, all of which work on a HDTV if you are lucky to own one of those beasts.

So what’s next? We have seen talk of even higher definition TV’s appearing in the next few years. Imagine HDTV on steroids, mixed with a console even more powerful. The other obvious routes which will be followed are the more processing power, larger storage, better networking experiences and a ton of other things… but what will be new? What can it do different to what the PS3 and others are doing now?

What’s your opinion? What extra will the PS4 do beyond what a PS3 does now? Drop a comment and lets discuss.
